A new year is the perfect time to reset your goals. To help you get started, I’ve put together a list of 10 essential idioms and phrasal verbs related to New Year's resolutions and fresh starts.


📚 10 New Year's Idioms & Phrasal Verbs

Idiom / Phrasal Verb Meaning Example
Ring in the New Year To celebrate the beginning of the year. "We rang in the New Year with a huge party at midnight."
Turn over a new leaf To start behaving in a better way. "I’m turning over a new leaf and will stop procrastinating."
Kick off To start or begin something. "Let’s kick off the year with a focus on vocabulary!"
Start from scratch To start something again from the very beginning. "I didn't like my old study plan, so I'm starting from scratch."
Stick to (something) To continue doing something without stopping. "It’s hard to stick to a diet during the holidays."
Kick a habit To stop doing something that is bad for you. "My resolution is to finally kick the habit of staying up too late."
Take up To start a new hobby or activity. "I’ve decided to take up yoga this January."
Break the ice To say or do something to make people feel relaxed. "At the first group class, we played a game to break the ice."
Carry over To keep something from one period to the next. "I have some goals that I’m carrying over from last year."
Look forward to To feel excited about something in the future. "I’m really looking forward to seeing your progress this year!"
